Recorded in Chicago in the early 1960s, Stand Close a Little While finds Pearl Hawkins asking for something very specific. Not forever. Not promises. Not pretty words. Just somebody close enough that she can stop holding herself so tightly for a few minutes. She has spent the day keeping her shoulders up, swallowing the sharper words and carrying things home without making a scene. Then somebody comes near without saying anything, and Pearl feels one corner of all that tension finally give way. That is where the record stays. Piano and upright bass carry the slow physical sway, with dry snare, restrained guitar, low Hammond and occasional horn replies leaving plenty of room around Pearl’s contralto. The second verse makes the closeness even more physical: a sleeve brushing hers, a hand resting at her waist, the ordinary noise of the day losing some of its weight. Pearl never turns that into a promise about tomorrow. The bridge strips everything down to the request underneath the whole record: “Don’t talk yet just stay where you are” And when the final chorus returns, she asks for even less. Just enough time for her hands to unclench. Just enough time for her shoulders to come down. Just a little while.
