Open Position Soloing | Major and Minor Pentatonic Licks with Open Strings

In this lesson I look at open position soloing, with licks and vocabulary played using open strings and the first three or four frets. Many players are stronger higher up the neck than they are down here, so this is a chance to get comfortable soloing in that area of the fretboard. We work around the three chords of G, C and D (the I, IV and V in the key of G), using the cowboy chord shapes as a starting point. For each chord I show: The major pentatonic scale in the open position, and how it relates to the chord shape The minor pentatonic scale in the open position How to add the minor third to the major pentatonic (the major blues scale) and the flat fifth to the minor pentatonic (the blues scale) Two licks for G, two for C and two for D, mixing major and minor pentatonic ideas with hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides The licks work in a range of settings: classic rock, country, bluegrass on an acoustic, and blues. I'd encourage you to learn the ones you like, then change them and come up with ideas of your own.
