NATURE OF VISION Many people have physical eyes that see physical things, yet they are spiritually blind because the eyes of their understanding have not been opened. Paul prayed in Ephesians 1:17–18 that “the eyes of your understanding” would be enlightened. This reveals God's desire for us; not only to see what is around us, but to perceive what He is doing and what He has called us to become. Sight and vision are different. Sight says, “This is where I am”; vision says, “This is not where I finish.” Sight sees the present; vision sees beyond the present. Sight sees what exists; vision sees what God can bring into existence. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “We walk by faith, not by sight.” God gave us vision so that our lives would not be governed only by what our physical eyes can see. Vision comes through revelation. You do not need physical eyes to have a vision. When God opens our inner eyes, we begin to see our circumstances differently. We may see problems, but revelation allows us to see possibilities; we may see our past, but God allows us to see purpose. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God's workmanship, created for good works that He prepared beforehand. This means purpose precedes existence. God had a reason for creating you before you ever existed. Therefore, your life is not an accident, and your future should not be left to chance. Vision is the seed of faith. Hebrews 11:1 connects faith with “things hoped for” and “things not seen.” Romans 8:24–25 reminds us that hope concerns what we cannot yet see. Vision allows us to see spiritually what has not yet become physically visible. 2 Corinthians 1:20 assures us that God's promises are “Yes and Amen.” This is why Psalm 121:1–2 says, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” Where you look matters. Look down and be oppressed; look around and be depressed; look up and be at rest. A person of vision lifts his eyes because he knows his source is the Lord. But vision must also bring discipline. We make countless decisions every day, and our vision helps determine what we should pursue and what we should reject. 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient.” When you know where you are going, you can say no to things that may be permissible but are not beneficial. Vision requires character. Discipline creates character, and vision dies where character is neglected. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts because the issues of life flow from them. Even Jesus endured the cross because He could see “the joy that was set before Him.” Vision gives us strength to endure present difficulties because we see something greater ahead. Noah demonstrates this principle. God warned him about a flood before there was any visible evidence of it. Yet Noah began preparing and building the ark. He built before the rain came. He prepared before the flood appeared. Preparation is the highest level of faith. If you truly believe that God has something ahead of you, you must prepare for it. Faith does not merely believe; it acts. If God has called you to lead, prepare to lead. If He has called you to teach, learn. If He has called you to ministry, prepare yourself. Faith begins acting in alignment with what God has revealed before it becomes visible. So, ask yourself: When you look at your life, what do you see? Do you only see where you are, or can you see where God is taking you? Sight sees today. Vision sees tomorrow. Faith begins preparing today for what vision sees tomorrow. The greatest tragedy is not to be born without eyes, but to have eyes and never see. Therefore, ask God to open the eyes of your understanding, reveal your purpose, strengthen your faith, discipline your life, build your character, and give you the courage to prepare for what you cannot yet see. Vision must eventually become action. God bless you.
