He mixes the dough, wraps it in a cotton cloth, lays it on a straw mat and treads on it with his paws, slowly, the old way, until it turns smooth and silky. While it rests he simmers kelp and bonito into a clear golden broth. Then he rolls it out, folds it, cuts thick noodles with a heavy square knife, boils them, rinses them, and sits down to a big hot bowl. No talking. No narration. Just the sounds - flour, soft thuds of paws on dough, a rolling pin, the knife, boiling water, and one very happy slurp.
