Do banks still need to develop two separate mobile applications for iOS and Android? How can financial institutions accelerate feature delivery, reduce duplicated work, and provide a consistent user experience across both platforms?
In the presentation “One Code. Two Platforms. Future-Ready Mobile,” Zbigniew Glinka, Principal Solution Advisor at Ailleron, and Dariusz Skrzypoń, Software Architect at Ailleron, explain the business and technological case for cross-platform mobile application development.
Mobile applications have become the primary touchpoint between customers and their banks. At the same time, financial institutions face growing pressure to deliver changes faster, control development and maintenance costs, and provide a consistent user experience across different devices. In a native development model, this often means two teams, two backlogs, two sets of tests, and two implementations of the same business logic.
A cross-platform approach allows organizations to build capabilities around one shared solution. A significant part of the business logic, communication layer, and user interface can be shared between iOS and Android, while platform-specific elements such as biometrics, push notifications, and secure storage remain supported through native adapters.
The speakers explain why Kotlin Multiplatform can address the needs of banks and other financial institutions. It allows teams to share business logic and communication layers, while Compose Multiplatform supports common user interface components. At the same time, organizations gain control over functions that are specific to individual operating systems.
The session also explores one of the most important decisions in mobile application modernization: should an organization start again and rebuild the entire product, or adopt a gradual migration strategy?
The speakers present an evolutionary approach based on progressively extracting business logic into Kotlin Multiplatform, migrating selected modules, and replacing parts of the user interface without stopping the development of the existing application.
A practical case study demonstrates the migration of a mobile application that had been developed for eight years. Before migration, its native iOS and Android versions contained more than 300,000 lines of code. The objectives included meeting accessibility requirements, introducing dark mode and a design system, refreshing the UX/UI, eliminating legacy code, and modernizing the technology stack.
Following the migration, the application contained approximately 150,000 lines of code, while the proportion of shared code, including business logic and part of the user interface, reached 95%. The new model also introduced shared end-to-end automated tests, a consistent design system and UX, and one team developing the application for both platforms.
The speakers also address common myths surrounding cross-platform development. A shared codebase doesn't eliminate all native components or remove the need for experienced iOS specialists. Cost savings are not automatic, and the benefits depend on the architecture, migration scope, and characteristics of the individual product.
The objective here is not simply to rewrite an application using a new technology, but to stop duplicating the same product and create a development model that delivers business value to users on both platforms more efficiently.
This presentation offers valuable insights for banks, leasing companies, lenders, fintechs, and other organizations developing mobile applications. It combines a business perspective with architectural practice and demonstrates how to prepare a mobile product for long-term development.
