I discuss five skills that I believe are becoming increasingly important for medical writers, based on my experience working in medical writing and scientific research for more than 10 years and across 1,430+ projects. Skill 1: Pattern Recognition The first skill is pattern recognition. And this is something that develops with experience. When you work on different types of medical writing projects, you start noticing patterns. The more you expose yourself to different types of scientific content, the better your pattern recognition becomes. Skill 2: Minimizing Plagiarism The second skill is understanding how to avoid and minimize plagiarism. And I'm not talking only about copying and pasting. Focus on original writing, appropriate attribution and accurate representation of the evidence. And with AI tools becoming increasingly common, this skill is becoming even more important. Skill 3: AI Tools in Medical Writing The third skill is knowing how to use AI tools effectively. I don't mean that you need to become an AI expert or learn coding. But I strongly believe that medical writers need to understand where AI can actually help them. Skill 4: Adaptability and Flexibility The fourth skill is adaptability. Medical writing is not one single type of job. You may work on a manuscript today, a systematic review tomorrow, a presentation next week and something completely different after that. You need to be willing to learn, unlearn and relearn. And I think this is especially important today because the tools available to medical writers are changing incredibly quickly. Skill 5: Collaboration With Other Professionals The fifth skill is collaboration. Medical writing is rarely a completely independent activity. Depending on the project, you may work with doctors, researchers, statisticians, medical affairs professionals, regulatory professionals, editors, designers, or other subject-matter experts.
