For nearly five centuries, much of India's day-to-day history was documented by outsiders, from the British, French, Portuguese, and Dutch to even the tiny nation of Luxembourg; colonial observers left behind extraordinary stories that rarely appear in history textbooks.
Colonial Currents explores these forgotten stories, unusual encounters, and fascinating footnotes from colonial India, the moments that shaped history but were almost lost to time.
In this episode:
High atop Thanjavur's 1,000-year-old Brihadeeshwara Temple, among hundreds of intricately carved deities, sits an unexpected figure - a Victorian gentleman wearing a bowler hat.
Who is he?
In the early 1800s, British surveyor William Lambton, leader of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, hauled his massive theodolite to the top of the temple to make one of history's most ambitious scientific measurements. During the operation, the equipment crashed, damaging several ancient stucco sculptures.
Lambton paid for the repairs. In return, whether as gratitude, humor, or quiet irony, a local sculptor carved his likeness into the temple itself, where he remains immortalized in stone more than 200 years later.
This remarkable story is one of the many forgotten intersections of science, empire, and Indian heritage.
