Who is he? In the early 1800s, British surveyor William Lambton, leader of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, hauled his massive theodolite to the top of the temple to make one of history's most ambitious scientific measurements. During the operation, the equipment crashed, damaging several ancient stucco sculptures. Lambton paid for the repairs. In return, whether as gratitude, humor, or quiet irony, a local sculptor carved his likeness into the temple itself, where he remains immortalized in stone more than 200 years later.
