Why would someone receive sugar, wheat, and corn as payment in 2026? In some Ukrainian villages, a unique tradition still lives on. People who spent their lives working on collective farms received shares of farmland, and many continue to receive compensation connected to that land in the form of agricultural products. My grandmother Maria started working on a farm when she was just 14 years old, after finishing only 8 grades of school. For most of her life, she worked as a milkmaid in a small Ukrainian village. Every morning she woke up at 4 AM and ran to the farm to milk cows. Then she came back home, cooked for her children, and returned to the farm again. After the Soviet Union collapsed, farmland was divided among former workers, and each person received a share of land. In our village, many families received about 2.5 hectares. Today, most people no longer farm this land themselves. Instead, the land is leased to an agricultural company, and in return, landowners receive payments. While many payments are made in cash, some people still choose to receive part of their compensation in products such as wheat, corn, and sugar. This video is a small glimpse into real life in a Ukrainian village - a life shaped by hard work, family traditions, and a connection to the land that has lasted for generations.
