Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America Live at the Toronto Ukrainian Festival 2026 — A Century of Bandura Tradition
Experience a historic performance by the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America (UBC) at the 2026 Toronto Ukrainian Festival, North America's largest Ukrainian street festival, held along Bloor West Village between Jane Street and Kennedy Park Road. This video captures the all-male chorus and bandura ensemble performing multiple songs that embody over a century of Ukrainian musical heritage.
About the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America
Founded in 1918 in Kyiv, Ukraine, the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus stands as one of the oldest continuously performing Ukrainian musical ensembles in the world. The group was originally organized as the "Kobzar Choir" by Vasyl Yemets, uniting bandura players into a professional ensemble during a brief period of Ukrainian independence. The bandura, a multi-stringed instrument unique to Ukrainian culture, is often described as "the instrument that best embodies the voice and soul of Ukraine," combining acoustic principles of both the lute and the harp.
The chorus's history is one of extraordinary resilience. During the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, bandura players were systematically persecuted because, as artistic director Oleh Mahlay explains, "governments were very frequently scared of the bandura and the bandura players, because they were the oral history of the nation and of the culture." Members of the ensemble were imprisoned, sent to Siberia, or executed. The surviving members endured World War II, performing in displaced persons camps before emigrating to the United States in 1949 with the help of Allied forces, eventually settling in the Detroit metropolitan area.
The Bandura: Ukraine's National Instrument
The bandura has between 20 and 65 strings, with UBC's signature instruments featuring the rare 60-stringed bandura. It produces a sound that is "emphatic and gentle, resembling that of a harpsichord, but with a wide range of dynamics and tonal control." Historically, the bandura was played by kobzari, traveling blind minstrels who preserved Ukrainian history and culture through epic songs. The Soviet regime sought to eliminate this tradition precisely because the kobzari were keepers of Ukraine's oral history.
A Living Brotherhood of Musicians
Today, the UBC comprises approximately 50 male members aged 18 to 70, drawn from across North America—including Ontario, California, Michigan, New York, and beyond. These musicians are doctors, lawyers, engineers, students, and retirees who volunteer their time, traveling on weekends for intensive rehearsals. As member Nazar Kalivoshko describes it, "This is not just your ordinary choir... This is a brotherhood really."
The ensemble's contributions to Ukrainian culture have been recognized at the highest levels. In 1992, the UBC received the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian State Prize, Ukraine's highest award for artistic achievement. In 2025, the chorus was named a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the United States' highest honor for traditional arts.
Toronto Ukrainian Festival 2026
The UBC's performance at the 2026 Toronto Ukrainian Festival marks the festival's 30th anniversary edition, held September 18-20 along Bloor Street West. The festival is North America's largest Ukrainian street festival, featuring multiple stages of music, dance, cuisine, and cultural programming. The UBC performed alongside acts including the Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and headliner Leleka.
This video captures the UBC's Toronto festival performance—a testament to the enduring power of Ukrainian music and the indomitable spirit of a culture that has survived centuries of repression.
