Dana Mermaid Photos: Little Mermaid Magic in Kona

This archival journey dives deep into the legendary Kona blue, world-renowned for its breathtaking 100-foot visibility that draws marine photographers from across the globe. Captured during the filming of the documentary segment "Kona Mermaid Magic Thru Wyland's Lens," this slideshow features a mesmerizing series of deep dives and underwater play. Swimming gracefully together, a young Paloma Field wears Dana’s handcrafted green "Tinkerbell tail"—celebrated for its magical qualities—while Dana dons her iconic, handcrafted real fish-scale tail. Beyond her underwater presence, Paloma was also an official "Sea Sister" youth ambassador for Dana's signature ocean advocacy clothing line. In a breathtaking sequence, Dana and Paloma swim up from the deep blue into the light, appearing almost dream-like as they glide alongside one another. Midstream through their swim, a pod of wild Hawaiian dolphins passes beautifully through the frame; look to the bottom left corner to spot Dana free diving down, peacefully watching the pod swim above her. Keen eyes will also catch a playful "mermaid paparazzi" moment as a fellow archival filmmaker swims by with camera in hand during the photo journey to capture the magic. Of course, the mermaid fun also includes Paloma taking a joyful ride while holding onto Dana's tail through the sunlit surface of the water. As the ocean swim concludes, the voyage moves topside with images of Dana and Paloma in-tail aboard the boat ride back to shore. The collection captures special moments on the bow, including Paloma with her father, local Kona artist Mike Field, alongside a group portrait featuring Dana, Paloma, Wyland, and Wyland's mother. The archival voyage closes from the land, looking out through the windshield of the "Mermobile" to catch a perfect Hawaiian rainbow guiding the drive home.
