WORSHIPING IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH Key Question: Do you know the God you received? Do you understand the God you worship? Because your understanding of who God is will determine how you worship Him. Jesus said in John 4:23, “The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.” True worship is therefore more than singing, lifting our hands, or attending church. Worship is a life that responds rightly to who God is. In Jeremiah 15:15-19, God says, “If you return, I will restore you… if you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you will be my spokesman.” There is a call here to return to God and to separate what is precious from what is vile. This speaks directly to how we live through different seasons of life. When things are going well, we can become so occupied with the blessings God has given us that we forget the One who gave them. Wealth, responsibilities, relationships, careers and pleasures can slowly consume our attention until God receives only the leftovers of our time. But when difficult seasons come, we can fall into another trap. We complain, question God, blame Him and allow disappointment to separate us from fellowship with Him. Watch the person you become in both seasons. Do not allow prosperity to make you forget God, and do not allow adversity to make you abandon God. Consider Job. In his prosperous days, he feared God and honored Him. But when his wealth disappeared, his children died and his body was afflicted, Job still refused to curse God. His circumstances changed, but his worship did not. That is worship in spirit and truth. Isaiah 1:13 reminds us that God is not impressed by religious activity when the heart is far from Him. God desires a heart that is surrendered, contrite and responsive to His Word. When the heart is transformed, our actions, behavior, service and offerings begin to reflect His presence within us. This is not a call to live a perfect life. We are human, and we will make mistakes. It is a call to live a surrendered life. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” We were never designed to carry everything ourselves. The burdens, fears, habits, traditions, wounds and ways of thinking that keep us from God must be surrendered to Him. Romans 12:1 calls us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. True worship is therefore not simply what happens on the altar or in church; it is what happens when we surrender our entire lives to God. The enemy wants to use both prosperity and adversity to move us away from God. In one season he can distract us with the world; in another, he can tempt us to become bitter toward God. But the believer must remain anchored in the Lord through every season. Jeremiah 14:10–12 gives us a serious warning: there is a danger in continually turning away from God. Therefore, while we have the opportunity, let us return to Him wholeheartedly. Today, you have an opportunity to straighten your path. An opportunity to return to the Lord with all your heart, all your mind and all your soul. An opportunity to worship Him not merely with your lips, but in spirit and truth. An opportunity to separate the precious from the vile: to remove whatever competes with God for your heart and restore Him to His rightful place. And there is a promise for those who return. Jeremiah 15:20: “I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” declares the LORD. When you choose God, God stands with you. When you surrender to Him, He strengthens you. When you worship Him in spirit and truth, He makes you steadfast. Return to the Lord. Separate the precious from the vile. Surrender completely. And worship God: not only when life is good, not only when life is difficult, but in every season. Because true worship is not determined by what is happening around you; it is determined by who God is within you.
