Vibhūti Yoga — Divine Manifestations Learn to Recognize the Infinite continues A Journey Through the Bhagavad Gita, following the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. By Chapter 10, Arjuna’s understanding of Krishna has changed dramatically. The person beside him is still the friend and charioteer who drove his horses between the two armies. But Krishna has gradually revealed a reality far greater than Arjuna first understood. In the previous chapter, Krishna explained that the Divine permeates creation while also exceeding it. Now Arjuna wants to know more. How can he recognize the Divine within the world around him? Krishna answers through what are called his vibhūtis—divine manifestations or expressions of extraordinary greatness. What follows is one of the Bhagavad Gita’s great expansions of perspective. Krishna directs Arjuna’s attention toward the remarkable. The radiance of the sun. The moon among the stars. Great mountains. Vast waters. Fire. Strength. Intelligence. Memory. Wisdom. Courage. Spiritual insight. Again and again, Krishna points toward exceptional expressions within existence and teaches Arjuna to recognize them as glimpses of divine splendor. These manifestations are not meant to contain the Divine. They are places where Arjuna can begin to recognize something that exceeds the individual form. A mountain is still a mountain. The sun is still the sun. A wise person remains an individual human being. But extraordinary beauty, power, intelligence or magnificence can become a doorway through which consciousness begins to perceive something greater. This continues the transformation that began when Arjuna first entered the battlefield. In Chapter 1, his world became painfully divided: This army and that army. My people and their people. Those I must protect and those I may have to fight. Victory or defeat. Action or withdrawal. Krishna has been steadily enlarging that frame. Now their conversation stretches across mountains, rivers, stars, sages, creatures, forces of nature and the vastness of existence itself. The battlefield remains exactly where it was. But Arjuna is no longer being taught to see only the battlefield. He is being taught to perceive a universe. And Krishna makes an important point near the end of the chapter. The manifestations he has described are only examples. Wherever Arjuna encounters extraordinary splendor, power, beauty or greatness, Krishna tells him to understand it as arising from a spark of divine glory. Then the scale expands once more. Krishna tells Arjuna that after describing all these manifestations, there is ultimately no need for an endless catalogue. With only a portion of himself, Krishna declares, he sustains the entire universe. That statement prepares the way for what happens next. Arjuna has heard about divine manifestations. He has been taught where to look. He has been told that the reality behind them is vastly greater than anything he can presently see. Now another question naturally arises: What if he could actually see it? In Chapter 11, Arjuna will ask Krishna to reveal the Universal Form. For now, he stands between two armies beneath an immeasurably larger sky. The conflict remains. But the frame through which Arjuna understands it is becoming too vast to remain confined to “us” and “them.” This song is part of A Journey Through the Bhagavad Gita, following the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna as the teachings unfold through the text. 🎶✨ This song is part of Journey Through the Bhagavad Gita, an 18-song musical exploration following the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna from the uncertainty of the battlefield through the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. 🪷🏹 Each song explores one chapter, allowing the dialogue and journey to unfold through music.
