Ravenna - Breath of Life (Snow White & The Huntsman)

« I will give this wretched world the Queen it deserves ! » A critic once described Ravenna as a « fascist of feminism ». Beyond the archetypal Evil Queen, the sovereign, played with ferocity by Charlize Theron, hates the world she lives in : a world where men rule, a world where they use women, take advantage of them before abandoning them, getting rid of them without an after-thought. She has made her beauty a weapon, her only and best means of survival. The cruel irony of her story is that, although she has become the most powerful person in the kingdom, Ravenna remains imprisoned in her castle, caged, driven mad by this inability to act beyond the walls of her home. It’s a complex, nuanced, and dizzying iteration of an iconic figure. When I was a kid, this film and its world, as wonderful as it is dark, fascinated me. And this version of the Evil Queen will remain, in my eyes, unmatched. The fairest of them all.
