The community was founded by Guru Jambheshwar, also known as Jambhoji, in the late 15th century in Rajasthan. Guru Jambheshwar outlined 29 principles (the term "Bishnoi" comes from Bish meaning 20 and Noi meaning 9) that emphasize living in harmony with nature, respecting all forms of life, and practicing a disciplined spiritual life. One of the most famous stories in Bishnoi history is the Khejarli Massacre of 1730. When the local ruler’s men attempted to cut down khejri trees for building materials, a Bishnoi woman named Amrita Devi, along with hundreds of Bishnois, sacrificed their lives to protect the trees. This act of bravery is commemorated today as a symbol of their deep-rooted commitment to the environment. The Bishnoi community continues to play an active role in protecting wildlife, especially the endangered blackbuck and chinkara, and preserving Rajasthan’s ecology.
