How to Make a Homemade Pulse Motor – Step-by-Step What is a Pulse Motor? ℹ️ "Pulse motor" is a generic term for any electromagnetic motor that operates by applying brief surges of current to a coil at the precise moment a rotor magnet approaches or moves away. How does it work in practice? You have a freely rotating wheel (the rotor), with several standard magnets attached to its rim. Positioned very close to the wheel is a copper wire coil (which becomes a strong magnet only when electricity flows through it). Objective: To spin the rotor with minimal electrical energy consumption, using only small, periodic magnetic pulses. When a magnet on the wheel passes close to the coil, a sensor (a mechanical sensor was used in the video) detects it and energizes the coil for a fraction of a second (delivering a pulse). The coil pushes the wheel's magnet away, causing the wheel to spin. As soon as the magnet moves away, the coil immediately de-energizes so it does not brake the next approaching magnet. The drive circuit acts like a high-speed electronic switch: it detects the magnet's approach and releases current to the coil only for the time needed to provide the mechanical push. ❓ Fun fact: Before electricity, a single large steam engine drove a central shaft on the factory ceiling, and all the machines were connected to it by leather belts. In the 20th century, the induction motor (designed by Nikola Tesla) allowed each machine to have its own individual electric motor.
