► The story follows Gabimaru, a seemingly emotionless ninja from Iwagakure who is sentenced to death but can't seem to die. He's given a chance at a pardon along with other condemned criminals if he can retrieve the Elixir of Life from Shinsenkyo, a mysterious and deadly island rumored to be paradise on Earth. Each criminal is paired with a Asaemon (executioner) to monitor them, with Gabimaru paired with Sagiri Yamada, a skilled but empathetic swordswoman questioning her place in a brutal world. The island turns out to be anything but paradise — it's filled with grotesque monsters, immortal beings called Tensen, and a disturbing cycle of life and death rooted in Tao, a spiritual energy system.
