🇬🇪 Gandagani is a Georgian folk song from Achara region in South-West of Georgia. Every Georgian region has its own original folk music traditions. Georgian songs are sung in the tradition of unique Georgian polyphony, which has been awarded the status of intangible heritage, because it is very unique and in fact does not resemble anything in it's structure in the whole world.
Songs and dances from Achara region have a cheerful character. Although in Achara there are also many songs and melodies that are intended to raise the fighting spirit, but Gandagani is that part of Acharian folklore in which love is sung, which is associated with the Gandagani dance.
Modern Gandagani dance absorbed several national dances of Achara from the past, which means that in fact it is a mix of many old dances from the region.
The root of the name of the dance "Gandagani", is the word "gani", which is translated from Georgian as "to the side", which means that its literally translated as "to the side and to the side"(since it's ,,gan da gani''= to the side and to the side), describing the movement in the dance that the couple makes in relation to each other.
The root of the dance itself is presumably pagan and is associated rather with the deity of fertility.
In the video, which is divided into 2 parts, you can hear 2 of the many existing versions of this song.
In the video Gandagani is performed by Temur Qitiashvili and the youth ensemble of Georgian folk songs, Martve. The translation of both parts i'll leave below :
1: The water was bringing sliver,
Cutt of a poplar tree.
Stop, the water, and tell me
What my beloved has conveyed to me.
Girl, girl, laughing one,
Come down here to the riverbank
Give me a drink from your jug
Feed me with your kisses
There, above, this spring runs,
It flows down in orange-color.
But girl, you are even more beautiful,
It takes my breath away
Above Khulo(a townlet in Achara) there are pigeons
The mothers of my Tchiboni(folk instrument)
When I see you, a beautiful girl,
Then i melt like butter...
There, above, this spring runs,
It flows down in orange-color.
But girl, you are even more beautiful,
It takes my breath away.
2: I have six apples on the shelf,
I saved seven for you,
You were chirping on the balcony,
I saw you from the window.
Girl, your white shiny forehead
Shines right from the beech tree,
Your facial features are taut
They are higher than ears of corn.
A rose garden in my bosom,
My soul remained with it,
I want this world for her,
I am burning inside.
If I never see you again,
What do I need this world for?
