Imagine if every sanitation worker in Pakistan stopped working for just one day. Who would clean our streets, unclog our drains and keep our cities running? The people we call korray wala or gutter wala are not responsible for creating the mess. They are the ones risking their lives to clean it up, often without safety equipment, legal protection or accountability when things go wrong. In Punjab, a bill seeking the welfare and protection of sanitation workers has been tabled but is yet to become law. In Sindh, a case concerning their rights remains pending before the High Court, while progress from the government has been slow. Nukta spoke to sanitation workers on the ground, MPA Ahmad Iqbal, MPA Amjad Ali Javed, human rights lawyer Mary James Gill, and occupational health and safety professional Naeem Sadiq to examine what the proposed bill includes, why it has not been passed, the objections it faces, and whether workers believe it will actually be implemented if it becomes law. Who protects the people who keep our cities clean?
