The Morning Papers is the fourth track on Prince's 14th album, the second to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, and, four and a half months after the album's release, The Morning Papers was released as the album's fifth and final single.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in early December 1991, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was included as the third track on early configurations of the 1992 album, until Prince later added the track My Name Is Prince, recorded a few months previously. It was included as the sixth track on the March 1992 and Summer, 1992 configurations of the album, before many of the album's segues were removed for release. It was also included as the b-side on a planned single of Love 2 The 9's in Spring, 1993, shortly before the release of The Morning Papers as a single.
The Morning Papers was a moderate success on all the charts on which it appeared. It peaked at number 44 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 18 on the Top 40 Mainstream, number 68 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and number 52 in the UK. The song became the first song by Prince released in proper form in the United Kingdom to miss the top 40 since Mountains in 1986, seven years earlier. This means that 23 of Prince's songs in a row had made the top 40 before The Morning Papers. The song, despite missing the Billboard Top 40, made the Top 40 Mainstream Chart, meaning it received significant radio airplay in America.
