Former Wisconsin high jumper and decorated Olympic jumps coach Jeremy Fischer joins The Dadger for a conversation that takes us from old-school high jump pits in Southern California to the biggest stages in track and field.
Jeremy shares his journey from being adopted and growing up in Southern California, discovering high jump, competing at the national and international level, and eventually choosing coaching over continuing his own professional career.
We dive into his time at Wisconsin in the 1990s, the legendary Nuttycombe era, Wisconsin's championship culture, the pressure of being a highly recruited athlete, and what it was like being part of teams that helped establish Wisconsin track as a national power.
Then the story takes another leap.
Jeremy talks about transitioning into coaching, winning Big 12 titles at Oklahoma, coaching his first Olympic medalists, and what he learned from working with athletes at the highest level in the world. He also explains why more experienced athletes can sometimes be easier to coach than younger ones and what track and field needs to do to better connect with fans.
We also get into his work building Maximum Velocity Athletics, his vision for creating a complete training ecosystem, and—perhaps most importantly—how becoming a father has changed the way he approaches coaching, patience and life.
From Wisconsin's triple crown teams to Olympic podiums and now raising his own kids, this is a story about competition, coaching, culture and what it means to keep moving forward.
