Welcome to another scenic virtual ride from Rails & Trails! This 30-minute immersive bike ride takes you along the famous 17 Mile Drive, an incredible stretch of road built by the Hotel Del Monte. It is now the home of the Navy Postgraduate School and Active Duty, military retirees and other qualified veterans can stay there. This video is designed for stationary cyclists, older riders, or veterans seeking new adventures. The goal is simple: "If you are going to limp, go limp somewhere nice." This video was created at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey (the former Hotel Del Monte), and this is one of the many beautiful trails explored on eBikes. This is to inspire other veterans to use their expanded MWR access for travel! My wife and I have stayed in Coast Guard light houses (Wisconsin), and bases (Florida), Navy bases (Florida, California), Army bases (Redstone, and Campbell). ⚠️ IMPORTANT BASE ACCESS & ELIGIBILITY: This ride features a military installation. Access requirements can change and often vary by branch and base. Required ID: To access "closed" bases or stay at Navy/Army lodging, you typically need a DoD Uniformed Services ID Card (DEERS-issued) that specifies 100% Disabled American Veteran with MWR, Commissary, and Exchange privileges. VHIC Note: In my experience at places like Mayport and Monterey, a standard VA Healthcare card (VHIC) is NOT sufficient for entry. Verify Before You Travel: Always contact Base Security (Pass & ID) directly—not the MWR or hotel staff—to verify current gate access requirements for your specific ID. Guest Policy: If you are sponsoring a guest, they MUST have a Real ID compliant identification, or they will be denied entry. As a 100% disabled Army Veteran, my goal is to help you "limp somewhere nice" by having the right info before you hit the gate!
