Before the War of the Pacific, Bolivia had a Pacific coastline. After the war, it did not. How did a dispute over taxes, treaties, and nitrate in the Atacama Desert become a regional war that permanently changed the map of South America?
This documentary follows the crisis from the disputed Bolivian-Chilean frontier and the ten-centavo tax to the occupation of Antofagasta, Peru's alliance with Bolivia, the naval struggle around Iquique and Huáscar, Angamos, the coastal campaigns, the fall of Lima, and the difficult peace settlements that followed. It examines why nitrate mattered without reducing the conflict to a single economic cause, why an existing arbitration mechanism failed to stop escalation, and how control of the sea was eventually converted into territorial bargaining power.
The result was not created by one tax, one resource, or one decisive battle. It emerged through a chain of diplomatic choices, military advantages, conquest, and negotiated settlement that left Bolivia without sovereign access to the Pacific.
