THE LIONS OF HWANGE | ZIMBABWE
In the vast wilderness of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, lions still roam across ancient landscapes of open grasslands, teak forests and mopane woodlands. This is one of Africa's great wildlife strongholds, a place where magnificent lion prides have ruled for generations.
Covering nearly 15,000 square kilometers, Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, home to extraordinary concentrations of wildlife and an important refuge for Africa's remaining wild lions.
It was also home to Cecil, the celebrated black-maned lion whose killing by a trophy hunter in 2015 sparked international outrage and brought renewed attention to the future of Africa's lions.
But Hwange's lions know nothing of the boundaries drawn by humans. Their territories extend beyond protected areas, into landscapes where conservation, communities and trophy hunting intersect — raising difficult questions about how these magnificent animals can survive.
Filmed during the making of A Place For Us, this short film offers an intimate encounter with the lions of Hwange, captured in their natural environment, without narration or commentary. Just the sights and sounds of one of Africa's most remarkable wild places.
🎧 Discover their story in Episode 6, “Across The Line,” of A Place For Us, a documentary podcast exploring the future of lions in Africa, the threats they face, and the people fighting to protect them.
