2,000 square miles of canals in Colombia, built with no king, no army and no orders — and in 2026 a Cambridge team finally measured what that work actually cost. This documentary follows the people who argued over the La Mojana field systems for sixty years. It begins in 1966 with James Parsons and William Bowen, whose aerial photographs of the San Jorge River floodplain revealed ridges and canals running to the horizon. It continues with Clemencia Plazas and Ana María Falchetti, who named it the Zenú hydraulic society, and with Fernando Montejo Gaitán and Sneider Rojas Mora of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, who spent decades excavating the housing platforms and questioned the lost-kingdom theory. We look at Clark Erickson's experiments at Lake Titicaca, where he rebuilt raised fields with wooden foot ploughs to find out how fast a person moves earth, and then at the 2026 labour estimates from Jasmine Vieri's team, which place the entire 500-hectare system inside half a dry season. The film ends in the municipality of Córdoba, where farmers are cutting the ancient canals again while the modern dikes keep breaking.
