The second half of the 18th century witnessed a decisive succession crisis among string instruments: associated with the Ancien Régime and lacking the sound power of its rival, the Viola da Gamba gradually lost its hegemony among performers and audiences in favour of the Baroque cello. The sonic display of this coexistence between the two instruments—and the revival of the former in the 20th century—is at the heart of the story Amarilis Dueñas presents in this edition of Young Performers.
