Back in 1996, I first saw Isaac Guillory play live. It was in a pub in Scarborough, UK…probably about 75 in the audience. Wonderfully intimate. I’ll never forget that gig because he was so incredibly gifted on guitar. Which is one of the reasons that I haven’t attempted to demo one of his arrangements yet. I saw him a few times but that was first. He played this song beautifully after introducing it as follows: “Bob Dylan didn’t write all the best love songs…just most of them” Brillant man - check out Isaac Guillory if you don’t know him. I recommend his album ‘Slow Down’ which he was promoting in 1996. Start with ‘Trains Medley’ and then ‘Wayfaring Stranger’. Spine tingling stuff. Back to Dylan and Songfacts: This is an anti-war song with a clear religious element. It calls into question the idea that God was on the side of the winners of wars, ending with the idea that "If God's on our side He'll stop the next war. ‘With God On Our Side’ was released as the third track on Dylan’s 1964 album The Times They Are A-Changin'. He first performed the song during his debut at The Town Hall in New York City on April 12, 1963. Chords Intro I emulate the harmonica intro on lead but the guitar really starts at F. F Em Em G - riff as follows: 3-2-0-0-0-3 x-x-2-0-0-x x-x-3-0-0-x C C C Verse C F Em G riff (or just play G) C C F C F C F C F C C F Em G riff C C …and repeat throughout entire song :O)
