"Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred." A skull in a wall says it, and nothing in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time explains it. So what was the Shadow Temple? We walk it in order: the village the Sheikah built, the well with something sealed inside, the temple behind the graveyard, where the fan story really began (with dates), and everything I could find that Nintendo has said. Then what I think happened down there. The last chapter is my reading and is marked as one. Game lines are quoted from Zelda Wiki's transcriptions, from the 1998 game or the 2011 version as marked, and from the recording itself. The Encyclopedia, Hyrule Historia and Creating a Champion are quoted as wiki pages and fan translations reproduce them: I could not open the books. The Japanese line is as a 2007 blog post gives it, in my translation. "The earliest I could find" means my search of wiki page histories and one Japanese blog; older posts may exist on forums I could not search. View counts were read on 10 October 2026. FOOTAGE AND IMAGES Gameplay of the 1998 game is World of Longplays' longplay of its GameCube release, played by Spazbo4 (   • GameCube Longplay [045] The Legend of Zeld...  ), used with the credit its site asks for (https://longplays.org). Each clip is the middle of the 4:3 recording at 16:9, without its sound; where a line of the game's text is read aloud, the frame that shows all of it is held. The short clips of Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask and the 2026 remake, and the 1998 title screen, are from Nintendo's own trailers. Book cover: Dark Horse Books. Words cropped, unretouched, from pages by Game Informer, Nintendo and Zelda Wiki. Music and narration are generated. Napkin Lore is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Nintendo or World of Longplays.
