During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Su Wu was sent as an envoy to the Xiongnu, where he was detained and repeatedly pressured and tempted to surrender. Refusing to betray his country, he was exiled to the remote North Sea region, near present-day Lake Baikal in Russia, where he spent nineteen years tending sheep before finally returning home to Chang’an. His story became an enduring symbol of integrity and unwavering loyalty.
