University of Michigan Symphony Band In the Dream (2021) Jeremy Kittel world premiere Dedicated to Corrina Van Hamlin (1981-2018) Commissioned by Howard Gourowitz as a gift to Michael Haithcock and the University of Michigan Symphony Band Michael Haithcock, conductor Jeremy Kittel, violin Composed and Orchestrated by Jeremy Kittel Additional Orchestration by Zac Zinger Program notes: “Just weeks before she would pass away unexpectedly, Corrina (my partner at the time) told me enthusiastically about a dream she had had, unlike any other she had experienced. It was impossible to truly describe, she said, but she still attempted to convey a sense of the dream, with its "vastness and infinite reflection,” in a note to me: '…In the dream, the colors were in gigantic arcs across the sky, all around above and below in the reflection we were standing on in various shades of blues from silver to sky to almost black...' She also mentioned a blue-iridescent hummingbird that made a prominent appearance in the dream. In mourning Corrina's passing, I experienced a curiosity about death, and life, I had never had before. I also poured much of my energy (and grief) into this piece of music. Corrina lived with great intention, energy, curiosity, diligence, and playfulness, and her energy lives on in all who knew and loved her. Huge thanks to Howard Gourwitz for his support in the creation of this piece. Also to the esteemed Michael Haithcock and world-class University of Michigan Symphony Band." April 3, 2022 Hill Auditorium University of Michigan Ann Arbor, MI recorded and filmed by Dave Schall, Cory Robinson, and Robyn Kimmey post-production by Dave Schall (www.daveschallsound.com)
