Federal government unveils framework for domestic data centres – September 3, 2026

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon announces new federal principles for responsible data centre development at a news conference in Markham, Ontario. The framework sets out five expectations for projects, which include delivering lasting local benefits, protecting electricity ratepayers, minimizing water use and environmental impacts, being transparent about local impacts and bringing strategic value to Canada. The minister is joined by Frank Scarpitti (Markham mayor), Carmine Marcello (CEO of Markham District Energy), Michael Ma (MP for Markham—Unionville), Helena Jaczek (MP for Markham—Stouffville), and Tim Tierney (president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities).
