🚨A major milestone has been reached on Ghana’s much-anticipated Accra-Kumasi Expressway project. President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will serve as the major subcontractor for the project, following the successful completion of the clearing of the project’s right-of-way. The Ghana Armed Forces Engineers have cleared 175.6km of the right-of-way for the planned 198.7km expressway, paving the way for the next stage of construction. President Mahama has also announced that a special account currently holds $2 billion for the project, with the amount expected to rise to $4 billion by the end of the year, according to his announcement. The Defence Minister, Hon. Gilbert Kenneth Adjei, has formally handed over the 175.6km Right-of-Way documents to Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza to facilitate commencement of the project. Meanwhile, the Roads Minister says government has disbursed GH¢23.1 billion to clear road contractors’ arrears and support projects under the Big Push initiative. The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Ghana’s major economic centres and reduce travel time along the corridor. Is the involvement of the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers the right approach for a project of this scale? And will the promised funding finally push the expressway into full construction?
