Grocery prices are moving this fall, just not all in the same direction. Ground beef averaged about $6.92 a pound in August 2026, roughly 60 cents more than a year earlier, while eggs and cooking oil are heading the other way.
In this video, Catherine walks through 15 groceries worth buying before November and the Thanksgiving rush: white flour, sugar, evaporated milk, canned pumpkin and green beans, canned tomatoes, broth, cocoa, baking chocolate, pecans and walnuts, fresh cranberries, dried beans, canned tuna and salmon, ground coffee, a beef roast and ground beef. For each one you'll hear why it's worth buying now, how to store it in the pantry or freezer, and how long it really keeps.
At the end: five groceries to wait on, because their prices are falling or they don't store well (eggs, cooking oil, butter and dairy, baking powder, whole wheat flour).
Price figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (CPI, August 2026) and the USDA Economic Research Service Food Price Outlook (September 2026). Storage times come from USDA FSIS and university extension services.
