This Rick and Morty lore video explains the life lessons hidden in the show, from Dan Harmon's Story Circle and Pickle Rick to Unity, the Cronenberg Earth and the Microverse. This two hour video goes through Rick and Morty one lesson at a time, and each chapter stands on its own, so viewers can fall asleep without losing the thread. It starts with the storytelling structure behind the series and the life of the man who built it. It then looks at individual episodes and what they say about avoidance, consequences, codependency, memory and control. It also connects Rick's drinking and escapism to Dan Harmon's openly discussed struggles with alcohol and his work in therapy. What's covered in this video: Dan Harmon's Story Circle is an eight step adaptation of Joseph Campbell's seventeen stage Hero's Journey, and it was the required template in the writers' rooms of Community and Rick and Morty. Harmon has spoken openly about self-destruction, alcohol dependence, his 2012 firing as showrunner of Community, and the therapy that changed how he manages his life. Pickle Rick, written by Jessica Gao, won the 2018 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program and works as a metaphor for Rick's alcoholism, and a line that named it directly was reportedly cut from the script. In Rick Potion Number Nine, written by Justin Roiland and directed by Stephen Sandoval, a love serum spreads through Jessica's flu and turns the world into Cronenbergs, and Rick and Morty escape to another dimension instead of repairing the damage. In season two, episode three, Rick's former partner Unity, a planetary hive mind, leaves him because both of them dissolve the people around them into extensions of themselves. Summer's objection to Unity's control, and the race war the freed citizens start almost immediately, show why controlling relationships are tempting and why they still fail. The Unity episode ends with Rick's depression and a near suicide attempt, set to "Do You Feel It?" by Chaos Chaos, and he survives only by chance. In Total Rickall, written by Mike McMahan and directed by Juan Meza-León, parasites can only implant happy memories, so the Smith family uses bad memories to prove who is real. In The Ricks Must Be Crazy, written by Dan Guterman and directed by Dominic Polcino, there is a Microverse inside Rick's car battery, and its scientist Zeep Xanflorp, voiced by Stephen Colbert, builds his own Miniverse.
