In 1865, a company in Finland began making wood pulp. Over the years it sold rubber boots, tires, cables and televisions. Then it became the biggest phone maker on Earth. One of its phones, the Nokia 1100, sold about 250 million units. But the iPhone and Android changed everything. Nokia's own CEO said the company was standing on a "burning platform", and Microsoft later bought its phone business in a deal worth about $7.2 billion. Yet Nokia is still here today. In this video you will learn: • How Fredrik Idestam started a pulp mill in 1865 • How three Finnish companies became one Nokia • The first handheld phone, the Cityman, and the famous "Gorba" photo • The 1992 decision to give up everything except telecom • The world's first GSM call in 1991 • Why the Nokia 1100 became the best-selling phone ever • The iPhone shock and the "burning platform" memo • The Microsoft deal and what Nokia kept • Nokia's comeback with networks, Infinera and AI Welcome to Started By Accident, where we tell the real stories behind famous companies, with real dates and real numbers.
