On 11 October 2026, Princess Anne attended the Laying Up of the Colours of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 SCOTS), at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh.
The ceremony brought together Scottish regiments to mark an important moment in the history and traditions of 1 SCOTS. Accompanied by the stirring sounds of military bands, pipes and drums, the parade paid tribute to the service, sacrifice and proud heritage associated with the battalion.
The following is a complete timeline of the evolution of the 1 SCOTS designation and the Laying Up of its Colours.
Historical Timeline:
30 November 2021: Final Parade under the Original Designation
The former 1 SCOTS paraded under its original designation, the 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, for the last time, marking the end of an important chapter in its history as a battalion under that name.
1 December 2021: Reorganisation into the Ranger Regiment
As part of the British Army's restructuring programme, the battalion was reorganised into the 1st Battalion of the Ranger Regiment (1 RANGER). From that date onwards, the original 1 SCOTS designation was no longer used by an active infantry battalion.
11 October 2026: The Formal Laying Up of the Colours
To commemorate the proud history and traditions of the former 1 SCOTS, its Colours were paraded ceremonially from Edinburgh Castle to Canongate Kirk, where the formal Laying Up ceremony took place. This marked an important moment in preserving the battalion's legacy and honouring all those who served under its Colours.
The Colours are powerful symbols of a regiment's identity, honour and history. Their laying up marks a poignant moment of remembrance and a lasting tribute to all those who have served under them.
