Who is the greatest NBA player of all time?
Michael Jordan? LeBron James? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Or someone else entirely?
To try to answer that question, I spent weeks collecting and analyzing data on over 5,000 NBA players, dating all the way back to the league's beginning in 1946.
I built a statistical model to evaluate basketball greatness across five categories:
🏆 Postseason Excellence (30%)
🥇 Achievements (25%)
🏀 Regular Season Excellence (20%)
🔥 Peak Dominance (20%)
⏳ Longevity (5%)
The model accounts for individual performance, championships, MVPs, playoff success, statistical dominance, career longevity, and differences between NBA eras.
Of the more than 5,000 players analyzed, 1,719 had sufficient data to receive a complete score across all five categories.
In this video, I reveal the top 30 players according to my model, explain how the rankings were calculated, and explore one of basketball's biggest questions: *Are we trying to identify the best basketball player, or the player who had the greatest career?*
No statistical model can perfectly capture basketball greatness, but this project was my attempt to approach the GOAT debate as objectively and comprehensively as possible.
Let me know your top 5 NBA players of all time in the comments, and which rankings you agree or disagree with!
