Visit to the Marikina Centralized Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City September 7, 2026 Reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting a cleaner, healthier and flood-resilient Philippines, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited the Marikina Centralized Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City on September 7, 2026. In his media statement, President Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of recycling and maximizing the use of recovered materials. “At dito naman, nandito naman tayo dito sa recycling para lahat ng maaaring magamit, lahat ng, for example, mga biodegradable na waste, ginagawa – ‘yung mga pagkain ginagawang compost. At ‘yung mga plastic nandito gumagawa sila ng bag, gumagawa sila ng bricks, at saka ‘yung nakita natin na nilalagay sa molde ‘yung plastic na natunaw na ay ginagawang materyal para paggawa ng mga desk para sa schoolroom at sa kung ano-ano pang mga iba't ibang bagay,” the President said. He emphasized that the system should serve as a model for other parts of the country in addressing the growing waste management problem. According to the President, waste management does not end with collecting garbage from rivers and waterways. Through proper segregation, reuse and recycling, recovered materials can be transformed into useful products rather than ending up in landfills or waterways. With intervention from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Marikina’s MRF demonstrates how waste can be given a second life. The local government unit (LGU) of Marikina City continues to strengthen its waste management efforts through proper segregation and disposal, recycling initiatives and community education. It also uses a plastic-to-school-chair machine that converts recovered plastic into school chairs and other useful products. Organic waste is processed into compost and organic fertilizer for use in community greening programs.
