Land Rover Cut 4,000 Jobs and Launched a Chinese Car — In the Same Week

Jaguar Land Rover confirmed this week that it is cutting around 4,000 roles over the next two years — roughly 10% of its global workforce — through a voluntary redundancy programme targeting £1.7bn of savings. The majority of the cuts fall on UK operations, where around 34,000 people are employed. Here's the number that matters. In January 2019, when JLR last did this, it cut 4,500 jobs and employed 44,000 people in Britain. Today it employs 34,000. After this round it will be around 30,000. Britain's biggest carmaker will have shed roughly a third of its British workforce in seven years, through two programmes both described as making the company fitter for the future. JLR has confirmed the brand sits outside its House of Brands framework specifically to protect the premium range from the pricing pressure it will bring. And Chery is in early talks about building its own cars at JLR's Halewood plant, with the government facilitating.
