Eight days ago, Volkswagen's supervisory board approved the largest restructuring in the company's history: around 50,000 job cuts, half its entire model range killed by 2035, complexity cut by 75%, and four German plants — Emden, Zwickau, Hannover and Neckarsulm — with no guaranteed competitive future. The reason given is stark. Volkswagen has overcapacity in Europe of more than 500,000 vehicles. It can build half a million more cars every year than anyone wants to buy. Four days later, Jaguar Land Rover announced 4,000 job cuts of its own. These are nine car brands collapsing in Britain right now, counted down: Maserati, DS Automobiles, Alfa Romeo, Honda, Fiat, Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover, Volkswagen, and at number one, Seat — a badge Autocar reports will be retired entirely before the end of the decade. It would be the first brand the Volkswagen Group has dropped since 1977. Also covered: Fiat's 60% sales collapse in a single quarter, the steepest of any established brand in the UK. Jaguar registering six cars in Britain in a single month, down from 783. JLR's British workforce falling from 44,000 in 2019 to around 30,000. Sunderland running one production line instead of two, at half its 600,000 capacity, with a signed agreement for Chery to build Chinese cars on the spare one. Honda, the brand Britain trusted for forty years, now among the worst performers in the market with no factory left here since Swindon closed in 2021. And the mechanism behind all nine: emissions targets squeezing from above, and Chinese brands taking 21% of every new car registered in Britain in August — with the best-selling car in the country in March being a Jaecoo, outselling the Ford Puma and the Nissan Qashqai. If you own one of these, or you're about to buy one, this is what it means for your warranty, your dealer network and your resale value. Which of these surprised you most? Do you own one?
