This entry is a little bit niche due to a combination of my affection for the song and the subtlety of the differences to be heard! It is not uncommon for songs to be remastered to make the clarity of sound far better and as technology improves this is only sensible prudence. However, in 2010 the entire Elvis Presley back catalogue was remastered under the supervision of Vic Anesini, one of RCA's top sound engineers. This enhanced the listening experience superbly but did not change any of the recording fundamentals - most notably the original mixing. These newly remastered masters were released on the huge "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" and on any subsequent releases thereafter. In 2012, Sony/RCA released two new extended sets of the wonderful 1970 album "That's The Way It Is" - one a double disc set titled "Legacy Edition", the other an eight disc box set titled "Deluxe Edition". Both sets contained the original album but whereas the Legacy Edition contained just one of the August 1970 concerts recorded by RCA, the Deluxe edition contained them all. The issue with releasing all of the six shows in one set was that four of these shows had already been released and all sounded so different that they sounded as if they had been recorded in different venues, not in the same room within a few days of each other. To overcome this it was decided that all six shows would be remixed meaning that to most it would be almost impossible to tell which song originated from which show without careful listening. The upshot was however, that the four live songs contained on the original album sounded different heard within the context of the show that they were recorded at! The differences were mostly subtle but in some cases they were quite stark. Two examples within this song was that the overdubbed audience applause at the beginning was not in situ and the orchestral break gives more emphasis to the string section rather than the brass. This latter change makes the listening experience more similar to that heard in the original 1970 version of the movie from which the song was first heard! As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
