WWII Restored Archives: Thunder Over the Reich | Allied Air and Ground Power in Color

Sustaining the Allied offensive across the European Theater of Operations required an industrial and logistical effort without historical precedent. Presented in digitally restored, upscaled, and colorized archival footage, this documentary chronicle traces the methodical Allied advance from the coastal beachheads of Italy and France into the industrial heartland of Germany. The film opens along the shoreline, where cavernous Landing Ship, Tank (LST) and Landing Craft, Tank (LCT) vessels drop their bow ramps directly onto the sand. From their decks rolls an unbroken convoy of M4 Sherman medium tanks, Willys MB Jeeps, and GMC CCKW 2.5-ton 6x6 trucks laden with high-explosive ordnance, rations, and aviation fuel—the lifeblood of a mechanized army pushing inland. Behind the advancing spearheads, combat engineers and aviation mechanics work in open pastures and bombed-out hangars to keep tactical aircraft flying. On a forward airstrip, General George S. Patton—instantly recognizable in his polished helmet and carrying his riding crop—inspects air-ground coordination firsthand. Overhead and along the flight lines, the U.S. Army Air Forces project relentless pressure: Douglas C-47 Skytrain transports marshal in formation to tow Waco CG-4 combat gliders for airborne envelopments, Republic P-47 Thunderbolts load heavy ordnance for close air support, and twin-engine Martin B-26 Marauder medium bombers strike Axis rail hubs and bridges. As Allied columns press deeper into Germany, the camera records the grim toll of total war. Armored formations roll past shattered urban centers and roadside graveyards of knocked-out German Panther tanks (Panzerkampfwagen V). Finally, on overrun Luftwaffe airbases, Allied troops inspect the grounded, fuel-starved wreckage of Focke-Wulf Fw 190s, Messerschmitt Bf 109s, and swept-wing Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters—mute testimony to the collapse of German air power.
