Why did old steam locomotives have those giant metal “ears” beside the smokebox? They were called smoke deflectors, and strangely, they became especially useful as steam locomotives became more efficient. Older steam engines blasted exhaust strongly enough to throw smoke high above the cab. But as engineers improved steam efficiency and exhaust systems, the softer exhaust could allow smoke to drift back across the locomotive and block the driver’s view of railway signals. The solution was surprisingly simple: two carefully positioned metal plates that used the locomotive’s own forward motion to redirect airflow upward and lift smoke away from the cab. In this video, we explore how steam locomotive smoke deflectors worked, why simply making the chimney taller wasn’t always possible, how designs such as Wagner and Witte deflectors evolved, and why the famous Flying Scotsman eventually needed them after receiving a more efficient exhaust system. We’ll also look at why smoke deflectors were common on many European steam locomotives but much less common in the United States — and how some streamlined locomotives solved the same problem without giant “ears” at all. Sometimes the strangest-looking part of a machine exists not because something went wrong, but because something else became better.
