How long does it take to form a habit? Not 21 days, and not exactly 66. In Phillippa Lally's 2010 study, the time for volunteers' habits to level off ranged from 18 to 254 days, and 66 was the median: the person in the middle, not a deadline. The volunteers each repeated one behavior in the same setting, like after breakfast, and rated every day how automatic it felt. The researchers drew a curve for each person and found that missing one opportunity did not materially affect how a habit formed. A 2024 review covering 2,601 people found the same wide spread, with individual estimates from 4 to 335 days. If day 21 still takes effort, you may be in the middle of your curve, not at the end of it, and one empty square on the calendar isn't a reset. #psychology #selfimprovement #mindset Chapters 0:00 Day 21 on the Calendar 1:59 96 People and One Morning Cue 3:49 Eighteen to Two Hundred Fifty-Four 6:24 Fifteen Years On: 2,601 People 7:34 The Day You Missed Footage: Pexels — Kaboompics, Luis Quintero, Hanna Pad, RDNE Stock project, Matthias Groeneveld, Tima Miroshnichenko, Artem Podrez, Yaroslav Shuraev, Alena Darmel, Burak Bahadır Büyükkılınç, Ketut Subiyanto, Thirdman, cottonbro studio, KoolShooters and 26 others Footage: Stock footage library Photos: Wikimedia Commons — পাপৰি বৰা (CC BY-SA 4.0), Eden, Janine and Jim (CC BY 2.0), Ted Potters (Public domain), Colin (CC BY-SA 4.0) and Attributed at Punjab (Public domain) Music: Mixkit — “Valley Sunset” by Alejandro Magana, “Serene View” by Arulo, “River Flow”, “Meditation” and “Forest Walk” Stock footage from Pexels — https://www.pexels.com Sources Lally et al. 2010, abstract (ResearchGate) — https://www.researchgate.net/publication/3...
