How to stop ruminating starts with a strange finding: in 1993 lab studies, people who replayed their problems felt they were gaining insight, but a 2008 review found that rumination impairs problem solving.
In a 2008 experiment, people trained to think concretely, asking how instead of why, came through a later failure less despondent than people trained to think abstractly.
We run one ordinary memory, an email that sounded curt, down two tracks side by side. The looping track asks why and ends nowhere. The solving track asks how, finds the details and ends on a next step. Then we take it back to the sink with one simple check: is there a next step I can take? That check is the channel's own tool, built on the research comparing concrete and abstract thinking.
LRN explains how everyday feelings and habits work. It isn't therapy or medical advice.
