Wuthering Waves has always had an interesting relationship with its protagonist, the Rover. At launch, the Rover felt like a familiar gacha protagonist: incredibly important to the story, but largely silent, emotionally distant, and lacking the kind of characterization that could make them stand out. But the Version 3 series changed that. From Rinascita to Lahai-roi and now Xiangfang, the Rover has gradually become a much more human character—one capable of insecurity, guilt, doubt, and emotional vulnerability. And in doing so, Wuthering Waves has placed the Rover in a fascinating position within the evolution of gacha protagonists. They are, quite literally, gacha's middle child. In this video, I want to talk about how the Version 3 series transformed the Rover, why their characterization stands out compared to other modern gacha protagonists, and how Wuthering Waves managed to turn what was once a fairly generic protagonist into one of the more interesting examples of protagonist development in the genre. What do you think about the Rover's characterization? Has Version 3 actually made them a better protagonist, or do you think there's still more that Wuthering Waves needs to do?
