In 1930 the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company ran more than fifteen thousand stores and was the largest retailer in the world. Seventeen states taxed chain stores, Congress tried to tax A&P out of existence, and a federal judge in Danville, Illinois convicted the company and its owners of restraint of trade. This is the story of the economy store, the Eight O'Clock coffee plants, the anti-chain-store movement, the antitrust case, the W.E.O. price war and the two bankruptcies that ended it in 2015, with sources for every date and figure.
