Monticello Railway Museum’s Southern 401, Wabash 1189 and CN 6789 MRM’s Train Days Weekend

The Wabash Railroad Historical Society held its annual meeting for 2026 in Monticello, IL which happened to coincide with Monticello Railway Museum, Train Days Weekend which was September 19th and 20th. MRM runs three trains all day both days of Train Days Weekend. As members of the WRHS my wife and I attended the annual meeting on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and during the free time on Saturday headed over to the museum which was right down the road from our hotel. We rode one train and then I set up to film some of the operation of all three trains. This year the following locomotives powered the trains; Train one had the Southern 401, a 2-8-0 Consolidated built in 1907 by Baldwin Locomotive Works. Train two was powered by Canadian National 6789, an FPA-4 built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1959. It was partnered with CN 6862, an FPB-4 built in 1958 by Montreal Locomotive Works. Train three had the Wabash 1189, an F7A built by ElectroMotive Division in 1953. This locomotive was the last F7A built for the Wabash. The folks at MRM did an amazing and very professional job. I was both impressed and pleased with their efforts. This was my second visit to MRM and my wife’s first visit. I highly recommend you take the opportunity to visit MRM. They have a great collection of equipment and do an amazing job of running their trains. They also do theme trains throughout the year as well.
