Farming Between the Turbines: ULTFARMS Results from Belwind

Discover the research carried out at the Belgian ULTFARMS pilot site in the Belwind Offshore Wind Farm, some 45 km off the Belgian coast. The team and partners share four years of findings on farming seaweed, oysters and mussels alongside offshore wind. For seaweed, a submersible system developed by Impact-9 sank below storm waves, and Alaria and Saccharina kelp grew well in harsh offshore conditions. For oysters, SEAPA baskets were selected after offshore trials and validated at a commercial farm in Ostend, reducing heavy manual work. For mussels, the team tested an acoustic method that lets farmers check biomass on their longlines simply by sailing past. Offshore multi-use works, but it needs robust design, careful planning and flexibility around the weather.
