The Ultimate Orange River Stopover: Waschbank Campsite & Gariep Dam (Solo Road Trip)

Breaking up the long solo drive from Pretoria down to Great Brak River, I stumbled upon an absolute hidden gem on the banks of the Orange River—Waschbank River Lodge. What was supposed to be a simple overnight stop turned into an incredible Karoo adventure! In this video, I set up the caravan at Waschbank’s brand-new riverside campsite before heading out to explore the rich local history of the Norvalspont Bridge and the Boer War Concentration Camp Cemetery. From there, we head up to the magnificent Gariep Dam—South Africa's largest body of freshwater. I take you along for the breathtaking views of the overflowing spillways and a walk right across the 88-meter-high concrete dam wall. Back at camp, I brave a freezing 5°C winter plunge in the infinity pool, reward myself with a classic Karoo braai, and watch one of the most spectacular sunsets over the Orange River.
