The search for Augite crystals, the dark crystal right next door. In Oregon, inside the Tillamook state forest there is an Augite crystal locality known as Cedar Butte. This was my first solo true mineral hunt or “crystal hounding” trip. Cedar butte has been a known location since at least the 60’s. The area was burned in 1945, this is why the forest is a single canopy all of the same age. I used the book “Rockhounding Oregon” by Lars Johnson to find this location and he cites a geological publication called “The Ore Bin”. The Ore Bin was published monthly by the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. In Volume 31 number 6 from June of 1969, there is an article called “The Geology of Cedar Butte Northern Coast Range of Oregon” written by Dennis O. Nelson and Gerald B. Shearer. At that time, they were undergraduate students at Portland State University. They both went on to have long careers in Geology and are both still alive today. I was contacted by a Geologist about the augite that I found at Cedar butte. He wasn’t convinced by the cleavage that it is Augite, so I sent a few samples of the material to him.
